Plant the Seed to Read — Youngstown Area Children’s Book Fair
PBS Kids character Curious George was on hand for the Plant the Seed to Read Youngstown Area Book Fair on April 28, 2012. Taking place at the Fellows Riverside Gardens, the free event brought together storytellers, illustrators, book characters, celebrity readers and many fun activities for children, including meet-and-greets with Curious George.

5th Annual Family Reading Festival
Western Reserve PBS was both participant and media sponsor of the 5th Annual Family Reading Festival, held at the Akron-Summit County Public Library on Feb. 4, 2012. We hosted WordGirl for meet-and-greet sessions throughout the day. The free event provided a book to every child attending as well as live entertainment from Jim Gill and storyteller Robin Echols Cooper. Over 1,700 people attended and 1,200 free books were distributed. The event was sponsored by Akron-Summit County Public Library, Western Reserve PBS, PNC Grow Up Great, Giant Eagle, This City Reads, Akron Children’s Hospital and Hattie’s Cafe & Gifts.

Shaw Jewish Community Center’s Family Wellness Expo
Western Reserve PBS was a media sponsor of the Shaw Jewish Community Center’s Family Wellness Expo, held on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at the Shaw JCC in Akron. Free family-friendly entertainment and information on healthylifestyles were the focus of this event. Western Reserve PBS hosted Walkaround Grover from Sesame Street in its booth.

Ninth Annual Healthy Baby Fair
On Oct. 22, 2011, Western Reserve PBS participated in the Ninth Annual Healthy Baby Fair at the John S. Knight Center, which attracted a large crowd of families and parents-to-be. Dan Hluch, senior development officer with Western Reserve PBS, hosted an informational booth and emceed the baby races held periodically throughout the day. The babies enjoyed the opportunity to roam while their guardians got some comic relief from Hluch’s unique emceeing style.

A Doo Wop Celebration IV
Western Reserve PBS hosted a live Doo Wop Celebration IV event on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Herb Reed’s The Platters, The Crystals and The Dubs performed their classic hits that including “Only You (and You Alone),” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Could This Be Magic.” Western Reserve PBS also hosted a Gold Circle event, which include best-in-house seats plus a private dinner reception and meet-and-greet session with members of the groups.

Dolley Madison: American Experience Screenings
Western Reserve Public Media and the Canton-based National First Ladies’ Library (NFLL) co-hosted the national premiere of the new American Experience documentary Dolley Madison on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. Muffie Meyer, the filmmaker, and Ron Blumer, the writer, attended the event to introduce the film and answer questions afterward. Western Reserve Public Media President and CEO Trina Cutter made the introductory remarks along with the NFLL Executive Director Pat Krider and NFLL Board President and founder Mary Regula.

County Fairs
Western Reserve Public Media hosted booths at two county fairs this summer and fall. From Aug. 10-16, we participated in the Cuyahoga County Fair’s Celebrating American Television exhibit, designed to educate and inform fairgoers about the past, present and future of TV in northeast Ohio and across the nation. From Sept. 2-7, we set up shop at the Canfield Fair. Both events gave the organization the opportunity to honor its 36-year history and to introduce its new digital television channels.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Timken Grand Parade
PBS superstar Sid the Science Kid escorted Western Reserve Public Media President and CEO Trina Cutter in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Timken Grand Parade on Aug. 8. This nationally televised event showcases the new class of enshrinees, returning Hall of Famers, giant helium balloons, marching bands and much more on the 2.2-mile parade route through downtown Canton.

Passport Fair
Travelers are required to present a passport when traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean beginning June 1, 2009. To assist Americans in meeting this deadline, the U.S. Postal Service and Western Reserve Public Media held a Passport Fair on Thursday, May 21 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the television station’s offices in Kent. This event was open to the public and allowed community members to have their passports processed and certified by trained U.S.P.S. staff before the applications were sent for approval. The U.S.P.S. collected fees, processed the applications and even took passport photos when necessary.

Generations: The Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Western Reserve PBS is working on a new documentary called Generations: Cuyahoga Valley National Park and has requested help from park visitors past and present. Over the last several months, the organization has been collecting oral histories, home movies, photos and other relevant memorabilia that reflect experiences in the park. Staff members documented items at three open houses at the park’s Happy Days Lodge in January, April and May of this year. Dozens of community members have shared photos, videos, diary notations, antiques, art work and souvenirs collected over the years.

DTV Open Houses
Western Reserve PBS invited community members to attend a free DTV Open House on Nov. 6 at its main offices in Kent and on Nov. 13 at the Austintown Public Library.
